Vorwort

Foreword

Today’s Germany is a stable and open-minded democracy. Crucially, this is partly due to the critical analysis of the rise of the Nazi Party and the years of the Nazi regime. The remembrance of those years is a warning, yet it is also a process which, rather than coming to end, is constantly developing. The www.frankfurt1933-1945.de web portal supports a forward-looking culture of remembrance which aims at setting contemporary historical findings in the context of the cityscape.

This platform brings together a steadily growing body of knowledge on the history of Frankfurt am Main under the Nazi regime. At present, it offers over 620 articles with approximately 1,100 photographs as well as supplementary audio and video documents across all subjects and themed areas. As an open and dynamic research resource, new contributions and references are constantly being added to ensure the platform reflects the latest scholarly findings.

www.frankfurt1933-1945.de has been online since September 2003. The initial idea of a dedicated web portal to disseminate and communicate modern history came from the ‘Topography of the Nazi years in Frankfurt am Main’ Working Group. Comprising 35 institutions, this was set up in 1999 at the invitation of the Department of Cultural Affairs. Today, the platform is operated by the Institute for the History of Frankfurt (ISG), and impressively combines depth of information with internal links to other pages on the website. Since it was relaunched, the platform has been optimised for mobile devices. The knowledge of Frankfurt’s Nazi past should not solely remain the province of specialists.

In that spirit, I sincerely hope this web portal attracts many interested visitors.
